Where Did FOILSZ Come From?

The development of FOILSZ didn´t just happen over night. It has been the culmination of over 20 years of sail, hull and foil development from the people behind KA Sail, the Bladerider & MACH2 Moths and the recently released WASPZ foiling dinghy. Everything learnt over these years in making the world´s fastest and most reliable foiling dinghies has been used to create the FOILSZ kit for Lasers. So when you buy a set of FOILSZ, you know you have many years of successful foiling pedigree backing the performance of your foiling Laser.

Here is a short profile of the companies that all played a part in the development of FOILSZ. The end result is maximum enjoyment with minimum effort for you.

KA Sail

For over 25 years KA Sail has been at the forefront of developing windsurfing sails that deliver great performance and serious fun for riders of all abilities. The Moth sail design program sail design started  when  Andrew McDougall to designed the winning Moth sail for 1995 World Championships. This lead to the development of the MSL5 sail which turned out to be a world beater. Over the next 25 years, KA Sail designs have continued to dominate Moth racing winning many world titles and multiple national championships throughout the world.

Bladerider Moth

With the intention to create a much faster and more easily controllable Moth that was more affordable and readily accessible to sailors around the world the Bladerider was born. For an early interview with Andrew on the birth of the Bladerider - click here

During 2006 the first McDougall designed Bladerider hit the water where it was an immediate success with Rohan Veal sailing the new design to win the Australian Titles and then changing the face of Moth sailing when it dominated the 2007 World Titles at Lake Garda.

When the 2008 World Titles at Weymouth came around McDougall was now sailing a highly modified Bladerider finishing second in a boat that had exceptional speed, winning four of the seven heats.

MACH2 Moth

The MACH 2 story started on a rock. Specifically a rock called Portland Bill in Dorset, England.  Here Andrew McDougall began to realize how to design the fastest International Moth on the planet. He was already responsible for the current fastest design but his natural learning from all the practice that eventually put him in second place overall at the 2008 World Championships, started to settle down into a series of thoughts. As he sat on a rock, waiting for the wind to go down, these thoughts fell into place, and became the makings of the MACH 2 design.

The rest is history with the MACH2 becoming the most successful Moth in the long history of the class that dates back to the 1930´s, winning 7 World Championships in a row.

WASZP

The WASZP project was conceived in 2010 by Andrew McDougall, designer of the world beating Mach 2 foiling Moth. The Moth is a racing boat with very few rules and therefore has developed into a boat that is beautiful to sail on the water, but not the answer to everyone’s requirements for a sailing dinghy. The concept was for a foiler similar to a Moth, but answered all the sticking points that stop people buying a Moth

FOILSZ Development

The development of FOILSZ was a process of CAD development, fine tuning various prototypes and the production of working designs before full scale production could begin.

Here are some images taken as the team created various parts of the FOILSZ kit in the development stage. It was only after a long development cycle that the final design was approved and production of the FOILSZ began.
